TEMPO PRO

Industrial Design

Tempo’s exponential popularity has surfaced a myriad of products users desire to support their quest for at-home fitness, especially those devoted to working out at a professional level. As stewards of Tempo’s design language, level iterates around solutions that amplify the ecosystem and strengthen the brand, while delivering users the stellar experience they have come to expect from Tempo.

WORKOUT BENCH

Fitness benches are typically rough and unrefined. Our work was dedicated to designing a bench which you would be proud to display, a compliment to your home rather than an eyesore. We turned to the minimal lines and thoughtful nuances of Scandinavian design for influence.

Innovation in technical materials, as seen in sports footwear, brought inspiration to the bench pad. Waterproof and cleanable, the premium foam is compression molded as a single part with the material, negating seams and bringing a dense, cushy surface despite being a fraction of the thickness of your typical bench.

The aesthetic was shaped by legs with an angled stance - a soft yet sturdy expression that marries into the undulations of the original Tempo Studio. Multiple mock-ups led us to legs which collapse, lock and release thanks to a large, easy-to-grab handle beneath the seat, allowing the bench to be carried and stored tidily, even in tight spaces.

SQUAT RACK

Perhaps one of the most challenging products in the system, Tempo’s Squat Rack unleashed a slew of hurdles. Existing squat racks suffer many of the same burdens as benches - clunky and unstable, often left with molding marks and joint soldering painted-over. We could not find one which could truly fold away.

Leveraging the same extrusion as the Bench legs drove down tooling costs while tying the design language into the system. The A-frame stance was inspired by Japanese ladders, with their pleasing, minimal profile and almost-symmetrical form. A button releases to adjust height and the J-hooks are custom designed for ultimate ergonomics and safe, reliable replacement of the barbell, all while meeting required safety standards and dimensions.

We were on a quest to be more stable, elegant and intuitive to set-up. Our biggest win? The Squat Rack collapses to a slim form that can be stored as you might a pair of Skis.

WEIGHT STORAGE

As Tempo’s users fell in love with the platform they asked for more - more workouts, more gear, more weights. A key tenet of Tempo is to fit seamlessly into homes, so with additional 25 lb and 45 lb weights in the pipeline there needed to be consideration around storage.
